Passenger Safety Cells are designed to provide extra protection for the car’s passengers during a crash.
The first passenger safety cell was patented in a car in January 1951.
The Passenger Safety Cell, also known as the Strong Occupant Compartment or Safety Cage, works with other car safety features to protect its occupants. The passenger safety cell mainly works with the crumple zones. While the crumple zones absorb the forces of impact, the passenegr safety cell is designed to remain rigid and not crumple around the passengers. It protects the passengers from the crumpling of the crumple zone and also in rollover situations. It allows the interior of the vehicle to be less affected by the crash while the exterior becomes badly damaged. Generally, the passeneger safety cell can be described as the backbone of the car.
The safety cell is made up of multiple elements, mainly pillars from the roof to the floor and side impact bars. The pillars hold up the structure of the cell and the side impact bars on the doors add to the overall safety of the passeger by keeping the structure strong. In the case of a rollever crash, the pillars will make sure the roof of the cell does not fall and crush the passengers while the side bars keep the passengeres from flying out of the car or hitting the crumple zone. Strong grades of allows enhance the strength of these cells/areas and can be found in most cars.
Unfortunately, there are always disadvantages that come with certain features and for the passenger safety cell, it could harm the passenger instead of protecting them. Whilst it may protect the passenger from large amounts of impact force, the passenger safety cell could injure the passengers due to their strong structure. In a rollover crash, the passengers could be thrown against the structure and injure themselves. Other than this, there is no real danger to passenger safety cells.
Passenger safety cells are a key element and factor to the safety of car's occupants. Without it, the number of fatalities on the road in the event of car crashed would be significantly higher. This feature is still imporving as we speak and is bettering itslef each time, so we can look foward to having a safer future when using vehicles.
